Orthodontic FAQs

Do you have a question about orthodontics? You’re not the only one. At Ripley Orthodontics, our team regularly gets asked questions about types of treatment, what’s involved, and whether treatment will be painful (it’s not by the way!). To help you understand a little bit more about orthodontic treatment, we’ve put together answers to the most common questions we get asked.

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on correcting the alignment of your teeth and jaws. Through the use of specialist orthodontic appliances, such as braces and Invisalign aligners, specialist orthodontists can straighten your teeth and ensure they’re in optimal alignment for your facial structure.

What is the difference between a dentist and an orthodontist?

A dentist provides every day care for your teeth, fixing cavities, providing oral hygiene advice, checking for gum disease etc. An orthodontist engages in more specialist care and treatment, such as the realignment of your teeth.

Does orthodontic treatment hurt?

No. It may be slightly uncomfortable at times, but any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain relief, such as that you would take for a headache.
